News Ordino - Arcalís 2023-2024

This winter is very special for Ordino Arcalís: it celebrates 40 years since its creation. To celebrate this milestone, the resort is focusing this winter's campaign on its customer, who has made it what it is today: a benchmark resort with kilometres of wild nature where you can experience intense emotions. 

On the slopes

Year after year, Ordino Arcalís offers one of the highest-quality winter seasons in the Pyrenees. This is thanks to its north-facing orientation. With 30 kilometers of slopes, two freeride areas and five ski mountaineering circuits, this year the resort presents a series of new features and improvements that will enrich the experience of those who visit Ordino Arcalís.   

  • Extension and improvement of the beginners’ area at Planells.
  • Improved snow thickness control.
  • More capacity in the Tristaina gondola lift.
  • Ordino parish bus.
  • The lockers in the Hortell area have been renovated.
  • Child safety bars have been installed on all chairlifts.
  • New construction and location of the powder magazine, with four boxes for storing explosives and detonators.
  • Two new circuits will be launched: Ski race in the lower part of Les Canals and Freeride skiing in the Abarsetar area.

 

Sustainability and environment

Since October 2020, Ordino has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve: a designation awarded to places that strive to preserve their natural heritage in harmony with economic and human development.

Snow making

This season, the Ordino resort will implement various initiatives to continue offering quality snow with the minimum impact on the environment. A total of 18 new farmed snow machines have been installed on various slopes (Balma, Hortell, Planell and Canaleta), of which 11 replace old machines and seven are new units in the resort’s snowmaking network. 

Energy-saving and self-production measures

Ordino Arcalís has also implemented several energy-saving measures that have been promoted for this season, in addition to those that have already been incorporated in recent winters:

  • A study is being conducted to switch from oil to geothermal heating.
  • Solar panels have been installed on the La Coma building, which will further increase the self-production capacity.
  • Six new electric vehicle charging points of 22 kW each will be opened in the Planells VIP car park.

 

 

Gastronomy and Activities

  • Ice climbing at la coma d’Arcalís

The Coma de Arcalís sector has a perfect area for ice climbing. This point is a 15-minute walk from the Coma restaurant, which can be reached by cable car. The area is very popular with Andorran climbers, as it is ideal for beginners and advanced climbers. The waterfall consists of three stretches of ice if conditions are good, various goulottes and even some mixed sections. It can be approached by ski mountaineering or using crampons.

  • La Coma Restaurant

La Coma Restaurant has completed the extensive refurbishment that began last season, with new and elegant decoration. For this winter, the upper floor has been renovated and, in addition, the venue has a new area for large group bookings and private events. The resort’s most iconic restaurant is thus enhancing the experience it offers, based on high-quality mountain gastronomy, with rice dishes, grilled meats, pizzas and pasta, as well as the possibility of lunches and dinners that can be enjoyed on a panoramic terrace with mountain views.

  • Els Planells Restaurant

The Planells restaurant continues to expand its menu, based on 100% organic products, and this year incorporates a barbecue that will operate at weekends and during peak season. This complements the facility, which was completely renovated last season with a new hall and decoration.

  • L’Hortell Restaurant 

The venue at the base of the resort is being renovated and will have a large space for large groups and will also be able to host private events during the season.

  • Dinner in the mountain 

Night-time meals continue to be one of the main culinary attractions on offer at Ordino Arcalís. Visitors can travel up to La Coma in a caterpillar vehicle and enjoy a dinner in an unbeatable mountain setting, or spend a magical night at the Sorteny hut, which also offers a special set menu when there is a full moon.

 

Sport competitions

Once again, Ordino Arcalís has become the epicentre of international sporting competitions that promise a fun-filled spectacle for competitors and spectators alike.

  • FREERIDE WORLD TOUR

    1 to 7 February

    Ordino Arcalís will welcome the best specialists of the Freeride World Tour for the tenth consecutive year, who will visit Andorra to enjoy the terrain and the great opportunities to draw creative lines that the resort offers. The Andorran event will be the second of five events on the FWT calendar.

 

  • OTHER COMPETITIONS:

  • FREERIDE JUNIOR TOUR

    3 or 4 February

    Ordino Arcalís will once again host a Freeride Junior Tour event. Promising young athletes in the U14, U16 and U18 categories will be able to show their potential in the resort mountains and start to make a place in the circuit to reach the great goal of competing in the Freeride World Tour in the future.

  • JAM EXTREME FREERIDE WORLD QUALIFIER

    14 to 17 March

    The 12th edition of the JAM Extreme, a 3-star Freeride World Qualifier circuit event, will once again bring together the great contenders of the FWT in Ordino Arcalís, where they will be looking to put on a great show, score a lot of points and qualify for the top category in the discipline.

  • BORRUFA TROPHY

    22 to 25 January

    Ordino Arcalís will again organise the Borrufa Trophy, one of the foremost international alpine skiing competitions in the discipline, now in its 32nd year. Over four days, the best skiers aged 11 to 16 will fight it out in the slalom, giant slalom, Super-G and combined events.
